- Popular Sovereignty: The direction of the government will move toward the will of its people.
- Federalism: The system of government in which many states form one nation but remain independent at the same time.
- Separation of Powers: Not all government power will be given to one individual or group of individuals.
- Checks and Balances: A governmental system of counterbalancing in which the power is separated between several branches that make sure that corruption does not occur.
- Judicial Review: The power of the Supreme Court to declare a ruling constitutional or unconstitutional.
- Limited Government: National government involvement in the state's and people's lives is limited.
- Bill of Attainder: An act in which a person is found guilty without a fair trial.
- Elastic Clause: Gives Congress the power to pass laws that are deemed "necessary and proper".
- Supremacy Clause: Declares the Constitution as the supreme law of the land.
- Writ of Habeas Corpus: Requires that a prisoner must be brought before the court to determine whether or not the prisoner will continue trial.
- Ex Post Facto: You cannot be convicted of a crime that you committed before it was illegal or unlawful.
- Due Process: All citizens receive fair and equal treatment in the court system.
- Expressed Powers: Powers that are written explicitly in the Constitution.
- Implied Powers: Powers that are not written explicitly in the Constitution, rather they are deemed "necessary and proper".
- Full Faith and Credit Clause: Ensures that decisions ruled in one state are still relevant in others. It prevents one from leaving one state to escape the justice system.
- Privileges and Immunities: No U.S. citizen will be granted any privileges or immunities.
- Extradition: The act of removing one who is accused or convicted of a crime from an area that is out of jurisdiction.
- Republic: A political operation system in which the supreme power is held by the people, then the representatives that they elect, and the elected president.
